Word of the Year: Austerity

Merriam-Webster Dictionary announced its word of the year: It is, tah dah, austerity, defined as “enforced or extreme economy.” The other words in the top ten were pragmatic, moratorium, socialism, bigot, doppelganger, shellacking, ebullient, dissident, and furtive. The words are selected based on “the volume of user lookups at Merriam-Webster.com in response to current events and conditions.” The site also has an archive of previous years’ winners.

Mark Blyth, professor of international political economy at Brown, has an interesting video on austerity:
