5th Annual First Amendment Cartoon Contest

Since America’s earliest days, cartoonists have entertained us and made important and thought provoking comments on our society. In short, cartoons contribute to our civic life. The theme of this year’s contest is: The right to freedom of expression in school.

All students nationwide — elementary, middle, and high school — are invited to submit a cartoon illustrating one or more of the principles of free speech, including symbolic expression.

Submissions will be judged on the basis of content, artistic quality, and creativity. Six winners will each receive a $50* prize. The winners and honorable mentions will be showcased on the Judges, Courts, & the Law web site . In addition, select winners will have the opportunity to speak live online with Mary Beth Tinker, one of the original plaintiffs in the Tinker v. Des Moines case.

Deadline for Submissions: March 14, 2014

Results Announced: May 1, 2014
