Gustavo Dudamel and Music Education
by Bill Hayes
OK, I hate to do two 60 Minutes pieces in one week. But the two were exceptional. This one is on Gustavo Dudamel, the new music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and his attempt to extend Venezuela’s extraordinary music education system (El Sistema) to the United States. Dudamel is himself a product of El Sistema and still leads the Simon Bolivar National Youth Orchestra in Venezuela. Thus far efforts to extend El Sistema have resulted in Youth Orchestra L.A. (YOLA) and programs in several other American cities.
Two years ago, 60 Minutes did another piece on Dudamel and El Sistema.
