Dropping the Ball

The New York Times’ Room for Debate lets various knowledgeable contributors discuss news events and other timely issues. One recent debate covered: Dropping the Ball.

Intercollegiate athletics can be expensive.

 Some schools spend up to six times as much per athlete as they do to educate each student, and have costs that increase at least twice as fast as academic expenses, according to a recent study.

 How can schools keep this up? Spelman College has decided not to, opting to spend its sports budget on a wellness program instead.
